Nokia has secured a contract to provide optical transport network (OTN) switches for Bharti Airtel’s optical transport network (OTN). This network will offer expanded capacity, increased reliability, and cost efficiency and provide superior services for Airtel customers.
OTN is an ITU-T standard created to standardize how services are packed into wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks. A single WDM wavelength can carry many bits per second; however, only some service instances require this much capacity. OTN provides a solution by creating ODUs (Optical et al.) of differing bandwidths: ODU-0 can carry GbE data through to ODU-4, carrying 400Gb/s data transfers.
OTN features robust error correction and flexible bandwidth allocation, with its ODUflex feature offering payload mappings directly onto router VLANs for increased router port utilization and adjacency, particularly helpful in transporting non-IP based traffic such as Fibre Channel or legacy TDM services.
